Newfoundland's colourful houses as a table topper from Quilting & Learning

Hi and welcome! The table topper is finished - some free motion quilting (FMQ) and mostly walking foot quilting. Here is a quick post to celebrate!

Painted fence becomes a table topper

As I mentioned in my last post, I made a table topper based on my friend's Newfoundland (NFLD) colourful houses painted fence.

Our friend in front of the fence!

We attended his retirement party yesterday. It was a lot of fun and it was obvious that he enjoyed every minute! I asked his daughter to take his picture in front of the fence, so here it is.

Getting Back to Normal from The Cozy Quilter

I have been reacquainting myself with my sewing machine over the past few days.  I decided to get going on quilting the potato chip quilt top I made for our new hospice (opening in the Spring of 2025).  First I quilted two lines in the sashing to get everything stabilized and ready for quilting the blocks. I also added a row of stitching around the entire quilt the width of the walking foot into the beige border and then a 1/8th of an inch from the edge of the border to keep it flat.  I hummed and hawed over ...

Orange Scraps on Free Motion Mavericks from Quilting & Learning

Hi and welcome! I'm still working on my Tibetan Appliqué piece. I'll show you an update at the end of the post. I just need to add the borders and do the free motion quilting (FMQ). I'll be taking my time on the quilting because I love the quilt and really want to make it proud.

Island Batik May Challenge and Blog Hop from Sew Preeti Quilts

Whoever said "Happiness is to be found along the way, not at the end of the road" wasn't making this pattern.

But let's start at the beginning.

For Island Batik's May Challenge and Blog Hop, we were required to use our assigned Winter 2024 collection, transforming fabric into a visual ode to joy and festivity.

I received Fire and Ice. This is an original collection designed by Claudia Pfeil.  It should be available in fabric stores now.

With my favorite pinks and oranges, this is a beautiful collection and I created about six paper-pieced designs in EQ8 ...

Island Batik Challenge & Blog Hop from Sew Preeti Quilts

The September Island Batik Challenge and Blog Hop is called Pieced to Perfection. We were required to make a paper-pieced project at least lap sized, using as many different fabrics as possible from our assigned collection.

I received Chromatic. It is an original collection designed by Deb Tucker of Studio 180 Designs.

Chromatic Bundle

Chromatic Fabrics

And here is my response to the challenge!

Bromeliad Garden

I chose "The Palm" block from EQ8 Block Library (under Old favorites).

The on-point layout uses 24 blocks. I used 21 (out of the 22) fabrics from the Chromatic collection. I used three fabrics ...

Beautiful Ice on Free Motion Mavericks from Quilting & Learning

Welcome to week 425 of Free Motion Mavericks. I've been mostly hiding in my books this past while, so I'll share with you some lovely pictures of our ice storm and my microwave fabric bowls or cozies.

All that glitters

I'm sure that everyone in the area is hoping that this is our last ice storm. It was beautiful from inside, until we lost power last night. Then it was just cold and miserable.

From my dining room window yesterday afternoon

The back tree glitters

Ice and fog!

We now have power and heating. Yeah!

Project Quilting 14.1 and Slow Sunday stitching from Quilting & Learning

Hi, Project Quilting, season 14 has started again. The first theme is "The First One". I just had time to make a quick piece. I'm also working on a new slow stitching project.

The First One for Project Quilting

The theme brought me to think of "one" which can be alone but also unique. That's where my thinking stopped!

I found a beautiful, unique piece of hand-marbled fabric that was gifted to me.

Happy hexie flower mug rugs from Quilting & Learning

Hi! It would seem that hexies are back into my life. They are very meditative to prepare and to stitch together (i.e. relatively mindless but enjoyable for a short time).

Happy Purple & Spots

July's colour for the 2022 Table Scraps challenge is purple and the theme is circles, spots and dots. Until last year I had very few fabrics with spots but because of a wonderful gift of scraps, I now have tons.

Mabern from Sew Preeti Quilts

Happy New Year to you! Hope you are staying warm, safe and sane.  Hey, two out of three ain't bad :-D

Looks beautiful, feels horrible

I have a new finish!

First finish of 2022.

Meet my first finish of 2022 - Mabern, a combination of Mari and Bernie :-)

Paul, the model

Mermaids Backing

Sunny Day

Mabern is so named because all the background fabric came from Mari and several of the focus fabrics came from Bernie.  Mabern finished at 40" by 48".
I will be sharing with all my favorite linky parties. See full list on the sidebar.

Holiday Gifts at Free Motion Mavericks from Quilting & Learning

Welcome to Week 360 of Free Motion Mavericks. I feel like I've been avoiding it long enough - like a groundhog who pops out of his den and finds that snow is on the ground and Christmas and the holidays are almost here! Yikes...unlike the groundhog, there's no going back to sleep now!

Mallard Duck Mini Finish with Free Motion Mavericks from Quilting & Learning

Even without my favourite sewing machine, I was able to sew and quilt with the walking foot, my son's Mallard Duck mini. When I showed it to him, he said that he would find a spot for this one and the other two that I've made for him.

Finishing the Mallard Duck

As you saw in my Making a Mallard Duck Mini post, the foundation paper piecing went well. I always manage to make at least one piece that doesn't have enough selvage but I'm really good at problem solving

Making a Mallard Duck Mini from Quilting & Learning

About a year and a half ago, I promised my son a third mini for his apartment entrance. My timing is off since he’s moving in a few weeks to another apartment. I really hope that he’ll have somewhere to hang up, or even use these as mug rugs.

Foundation Paper Piecing a Mallard Duck

I’ve used a few of "Made by Marney" foundation paper piecing patterns. I particularly like her Woodland Animals series.

I love this little guy. As you can see, I haven’t cropped it yet.

Since my Jag ...

September OMG done from Quilting & Learning

Hi! I'm cutting it pretty close but they are done - my niece's curtains for her cottage bedroom. These are my September One Monthly Goal (OMG).

Tab top curtains in buffalo red & black plaid flannel

This was the first time that I made tab top curtains. In my curtain making days, we made a sleeve to pull it though. These curtains weren't very difficult but I'm really glad that I didn't have to buy a pattern. YouTube can be pretty wonderful.

Could it be?? Another Finish? from Needle and Foot

Yep – it’s true. I have another finish to share. The very small, almost non-existent, silver lining to the fires and smoke we are experiencing is having to stay inside. The smoke is thick and the air very unhealthy so we have been indoors continuously for a long while. This means I can sew!

OK – I started this quilt ages ago. The fabric was leftover from the twin size quilt I made for Julia’s bed in our Downieville house (which we sold this summer.) I made that quilt back in early 2016.

Downieville Quilt

This was a huge quilt ...
